1498873 Grinding rotary engine seals SEALED POWER CORP 9 Jan 1975 [10 Jan 1974] 860/75 Heading B3D A device for trimming the ends of rotary engine side seals 24, 26 comprises a base 36 for releasably retaining at least one seal in the generally curved state it assumes in the engine, stops 48, 82 for positioning the seal to determine the amount of material to be removed from an end of the seal, and a material removing tool 64 movable in a plane to trim the seal to the desired length. The seals 24, 26 are, in use, disposed between button seals 18 at the apices of a rotary engine piston 10 having grooves 20, 22 for retaining the seals. The base of the trimming device has a worktable 36 which is supported by side plates 40, 42 and formed with a pair of grooves 44, 46 having substantially the same curvature as the grooves 20, 22 in the piston. A first stop 48 is adjustably secured to the worktable by a screw 50 engaging a slot 52 and has a pair of pins engaging the groove 44. As described, the material removing tool is a grinding wheel 64 having a spindle 66 mounted in a bearing 68 on a plate 56 supported by a pivot 58 from the side wall 40, the plate carrying a motor 70 connected by a belt drive 76 to the spindle 66. A second stop 82 is adjustable along a guide way 84 on the plate 56. A caliper (102, Fig. 8, not shown) is used to set the stops. In use, stop 82 is adjusted according to a scale from the plane of the side face of the grinding wheel to determine the desired clearance between the end-faces of the seals and the button seals 18. The caliper (102) is used to measure the distance between the button seals and is then engaged with the stop 82, when the plate 56 is pivoted to the position shown, and the stop 48 is adjusted to that distance. When the caliper is removed, the place is swung so that the peripheral surface of the wheel rough grinds the ends of seals placed in the grooves 44, 46, the side face of the wheel finish grinding the seals to the desired length.
