1507206 Artificial fireplace log LINWO INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 April 1976 [5 May 1975] 18828/75 Heading C5G An artificial fireplace log comprises an elongated body, which retains its elongated form during combustion, the body being of material capable of self-sustaining combustion, and a relatively narrow ignition strip comprising readily-flammable combustible material applied to and extending along the length of the body on its outside, the material of the ignition strip being selected so that, once ignited, its combustion is sufficiently sustained to initiate self-sustaining combustion of the combustible matter of adjacent portions of the body. The combustible matter of the body may comprise a combination of particulate cellulosic material and one or more petroleum fractions. The cellulosic material may be selected from softwood, hardwood, nut shells, straws, paper pulp, cotton waste and rice hulls, and the petroleum fuel fractions may be selected from slack waxes liquifying at 50-72‹C. The ignition strip may be formed by (a) a combustible powder e.g. polyoxymethylene glycol, triazone, naphthalene, polystyrene, flammable fatty acid or soap or a mixture such as carbon with oxidizing agents and powdered rosins, waxes or sulphur, (b) a unitary form-retaining strip for example of polystyrene, styrene-butadiene copolymers, or cellulose film, (c) a ribbon of an absorbent material saturated with one or more combustible fuels in which the ribbon may optionally be coated with varnish to minimize fuel loss; the absorbent material may be cotton, cardboard or hemp, (d) a paste comprising liquid fuel (e.g. having flash point below 175‹C. and a volatility sufficiently low that the fuel is retained in the paste) in admixture with a thickener, (e) a solid solution of a liquid fuel in a carrier that is normally solid at room temperature in which the carrier may be a meltable solid in which the fuel is soluble and the ignition strip may further comprise at least one of wood flour, carbon powder, montmorillonites and fatty acid metal salts and have a surface dressing of wicking or oxidizing agent, or (f) a solid emulsion of a solid or liquid fuel having a flash point below 175‹C. within a solid phase in which the fuel is substantially insoluble; the fuel may be methanol, ethanol, C 4- C 10 alcohols, glycols, keto-alcohols, vinyl and glycol ethers, esters, organic acids, or hydroxy acids and the solid phase with an emulsifying agent dissolved therein may be waxes, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers, naphthalenes, oil-soluble synthetic resins, polyxylene, pitches, or polyalkylenes. This type of emulsion may contain wood flour, charcoal powder and oxidizing agents. Alternatively, the fuel may be naphthas, kerosenes, fuel oils, tall oil cuts, mineral oils, ethers, borines, benzene, styrene, xylenes, or silicone resins and the solid may be piperazine, phenyl naphthylamine, high molecular weight fatty acids or alcohols, polyethylene glycols, phenol, resorcinol, sorbitol, mannitol, neopentyl glycol, diacrylate, polyacetone polyols, polyketones, vinyl alcohol or vinyl acetate resins, vinyl butyrol resins or vinyl ethyl ether resins. Still further, the solid phase may be a polymerized carbamide resin and the liquid fuel may be naphthas, kerosenes, fuel oils, tall oil cuts, mineral oils, ethers, borines, benzene, styrenes, xylenes and silicone resins. |
