<p>1416215 Tape cartridges for use with cassette apparatus SONY CORP 22 Aug 1973 [24 Aug 1972] 39839/73 Heading B8M An endless-tape cartridge, for use with a reelto-reel cassette transport in a rotary-head video recorder having automatic loading, wherein a pin 51<SP>1</SP> extracts a tape loop from the cartridge or cassette, comprises a random storage compartment 15 for storing the loading loop, as well as a reel 12 on which the tape is wound; and drive means for returning the loop to the compartment 15 during unloading, comprising a roller 11 driven by one (take-up reel) drive shaft of the transport, and a pinch roller 53. During loading the tape is tensioned, which disengages pinch roller 53 from roller 11 and allows tape to be withdrawn through opening 19 of the compartment 15; and when tension is released during unloading a spring 55 engages the pinch roller 53 with roller 11. The roller 11 also drives reel 12, e.g. through a cable 13. The tape may, as shown, be wound TR round a hub 31 of the reel 12 and a post 35, being supported on a low-friction plate 38 and splayed by a resilient strip 37 secured to the post 35, so that tape may be withdrawn from the inner turn over a guide 36 also secured to the post 35; the ends 31 surrounding an opening receiving the other (supply reel) drive shaft of the transport, which is not, however, utilized. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown) the tape is wound between two reels (201, 202). The tape passes over a low-friction plate 40, (140) to a slanted guide bar 42, (142) and guide pins or rollers 44, 45 (on a flexible arm 46) and 47.
