<p>1475456 Gas turbine plant FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 13 March 1975 [22 April 1974] 10470/75 Heading F1G The invention relates to a gas turbine engine in which at starting the engine operates as a normal type of combustion engine but which for normal operation acts with a heated air and fuel mixture as the turbine working fluid. The engine shown in Fig. 1 is of the single-shaft type suitable for a road vehicle and comprises an air compressor 10, air pre-heater 20, combustion equipment 26 and a turbine 12; a catalytic combustion chamber 28 is disposed downstream of the turbine. At starting the pre-heated air and fuel mixture is burned in the combustion chamber, the gases passing through the turbine, which is thereby driven, through the catalytic combustion chamber 28 thence through the hot pass 24 of the heat exchanger to pre-heat the air. The combustion chamber 26 is then shut down, but fuel supply thereto is re-started, so that the air/fuel mixture passes to the turbine which thus continues to drive, the mixture passing to the chamber 28 where catalytic combustion occurs, the resulting gases passing through the hot pass 24 of the heat exchanger 20 so that the air in cold pass 22 continues to be pre-heated.
