A switch is connected across at least part of one winding of the transformer and is closed in response to the detection of no-load conditions by an output voltage sensor so as to improve voltage and waveform regulation over a wide input range. As shown, a saturable iron-cored transformer 12 has a capacitor 14 and air-gapped reactor 16 connected on its input side. The transformer may be an auto-transformer or an isolating transformer and has a switching device 32 connected across part of its output winding. The device 32 may be a saturable reactor, magnetic amplifier, anti-parallel thyristors or a triac, its conduction being controlled by a coil 34 connected in series with a D.C. supply 46 and a transistor or SCR 48. The device 48 is turned on at no-load conditions by an amplifier and reference circuit 38 receiving as input the output voltage E O after rectification 36 and averaging 40, 42, thus pre-loading the ferroresonant circuit. The arrangement may be used to provide a regulated D.C. supply by sensing the rectified output voltage. |
