Funicular rail vehicle safety brake - has rail locking jaws controlled by cam and ratchet on side of wheel (OE 15.6.77)

The funicular rail vehicle has a guide wheel (1) travelling on a rail. The rail is gripped between pairs of locking jaws (5). On the side of the wheel, at the centre is mounted a disc cam (2) with a set of six teeth (3) around it. This is engaged by a ratchet lever arrangement (4) so that for every sixth part of a revolution, the brake is unlocked. This system acts as a safety device if the vehicle begins to travel too fast. Each side of the cam are supported resilient blocks (7) between chassis members. Ahead of the locking jaws are guide rollers (8) on each side of the rail. At one end of each arm carrying a jaw (5), there is a compression spring. This arrangement compensates for brake wear.
