A lever (1) has two arms (5) joined at the top and bottom. A shaft (2) between the arms has a spigot (6) which engages the arms so that as the lever rotates under its own weight from an upper position (3) to a lower position it rotates the shaft. It is halted in the lower position by a stop with its end on the inside of a spiral ramp. A second identical lever diametrically opposite the first one continues to turn the shaft which takes the ramp with it. The ramp is shaped so that this rotation lifts the lever (1) vertically with the absorption of less energy than that delivered by the lever on its downward stroke.
