Machines used for crimping electrical connectors are a source of danger due to the possibility of the operator's fingers being trapped. The usual type of guard is not very effective, since it often obscures the operator's view. To overcome this difficulty, it is proposed to use a light source which emits two beams of light on either side of the work. The light beams are received by photo electric cells. In the event of the operator's fingers being too close to the work when the machine is operating, the light beams are intercepted and the machine is switched off. If necessary, more than one light source and more than two photo electric cells may be used, and the principle can, of course, be applied to other types of machine. |
