Circular knitting machine is provided with a workpiece draw-off device driven by an independent electric motor, which is a DC motor with permanent magnet excitation and with a torque control device which includes (a) an adjustable current supply; (b) a cycle generator; (c) a switch, actuated by the generator; and (d) control circuitry with the aid of which the cycle frequency of the generator can be lowered during tripping of the motor. Tensioning of the wound workpiece can thus be maintained at constant value.
