The transfer line has several similar machining units with pickups delivering electric test signals. It has further a control unit to which test signals are applied. It delivers together with a programming unit control signals to control elements responding to them. Each pickup (15-18, 25-28, 35-38) outputs is connected to an interrogation circuit which interrogates them consecutively individually or in groups and applies test signals to the control unti (4). Each control element (11-14, 21, 24, 31-34) is connected to a distributor to which control signals from the control unit (4) are applied individually or in groups. Distributor delivers these signals individually or in groups to individual control elements or groups of them (11-14, 21-24, 31-34). Interrogation circuit and distributor are controlled by the control unit synchronously in accordance with a series address program.
