Device for fragmenting drops or gobs of glass leaving a melting furnace, so the drops can be subsequently remelted. The drops or gobs are fed into a bath of liq. where fragmentation occurs. The novelty is the use of a trough which is open at one end and held in a chassis via floating mountings; and at least one wall of the trough is fitted with a vibrator. The trough is pref. inclined with its open end upwards in the chassis. The trough is pref. mounted via a portal and shock absorbers, esp. using spring mountings; and the glass is fragmented by quenching combined with vibration. Used for example, in conjunction with a row of glass melting furnaces used to make bottles, where the molten glass is continuously used but sometimes a mechanical breakdown occurs so a gob must be removed from the furnace outlet. The gob is collected and simultaneously fragmented in the trough so it can be remelted without the need for any crushing or milling operations.
