1498186 Catalytic hydrogenation of coal, mineral oils and edible oils H H AUER and F J ZUCKER 20 Dec 1974 [21 Dec 1973] 55240/74 Headings C5E and C5C [Also in Division B1] A process for carrying out the continuous catalytic hydrogenation of a flowable material, e.g. coal slurry, mineral oils or edible oil or fat comprises passing the material and a gas comprising molecular hydrogen through a reaction zone defined between a rotor and stator each comprising a plurality of coaxial rings of graduated diameter, with each ring having an annular row of teeth formed thereon or being provided with an annular portion having a plurality of apertures defined therein, the annular rows or portions of the rotor overlapping with the corresponding annular rows or portions of the opposed stator, and subjecting the material and gas in the zone to high shearing forces and rapidly alternating compressions and expansions in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst by rotating the rings of the rotor adjacent the corresponding rings of the catalyst. The rotor and stator may each have 3-5 rings, each ring having 50-1500 teeth or apertures. The catalyst may be carried on or be comprised in the teeth or apertured rings and/or may be introduced to the reaction zone premixed with the flowable material or separately. Application 55241/74 is referred to.
