The catalyst is carried on asbestos fabric located in the stopper. The fabric is pref. in the form of a rolled-up spiral or, alternatively, >=1 cylinder, with an inter. layer contg. a second catalyst for oxidn. of antimony hydride. The asbestos insert is easy to make and to use, the catalyst being employed to reduce or eliminate the re-filling of the battery with distilled water, by causing the H2 and O2 to recombine.
