The railway vehicle buffer is composed of a vertical percussion plate (3) extended by a piston (4) which slides in a shaft (5) integral with the vehicle chassis (2). The piston is subjected to visco-elastic shock absorber (6). The buffer comprises complementary non-elastic energy absorbers interposed between the chassis and the shaft and/or between the percussion plate. These absorbers comprise a composite absorber (16) interposed between the chassis and shaft bottom (15). A second absorption structure (17) in the form of a stepped metallic absorber, activated after the complete crushing of the composite absorber, engages the rear face of the percussion plate. Locks (26) of the shaft are arranged to be released from a predetermined shock value to enable operation of the complementary energy absorber.
