Treating of smoking compsn. to improve its resistance to water comprises first mixing Na CMC with a natural tobacco and/or a mineral or organic combustible material which is not harmful to health. The mixt. is formed into a leaf or strip to form a smoking compsn. which is heated at 110-240 degrees C to reduce the moisture content to 1% and below. The moisture content of the treated product is then adjusted to the equilibrium value. The process is for tobacco substitute used esp. to make cigarettes. The process provides a simple and inexpensive method for improving the water resistance necessary in the moisturising and aq. additive addn. stages. The product is satisfactory in physical and taste properties.
