Medicaments for use in human and veterinary medicine contain oligo- or polynuclear molecules consisting of FeII or FeIII atoms linked together by one or more OH or O bridges. A typical medicament, comprising a polymeric cpd. in which the Fe atoms are linked by double OH bridges and coordinated with bidentate glucose ligands, is prepd. by heating a 0.005M soln. of Fe ions at 80-100 degrees C and treating with 0.28M glucose soln. The medicaments can be used to treat bacterial, fungal and viral infections, inflammations not detectably induced by microorganisms, acute and chronic inflammatory disorders of the lymphatic system, quinsy and chronic tonsillar inflammations. They also have some antineoplastic activity. The medicaments activate the body's defence mechanism without causing allergic or toxic side effects and without inducing resistance in microorganisms.
