Biodegradable fabric softener actives (X) comprise quaternary ammonium compounds of formula (I) and/or (II) and optionally /~ 20% mono long chain softener. R = H or 1-6C alkyl or hydroxyalkyl, especially Me, Et, propyl, hydroxyethyl or benzyl; m = 2 or 3, especially 2; n = 1-4, especially 2; Y = O-(O)C, (R)N-(O)C, C(O)-N-(R) or C(O)-(O); sum of C in R1 plus one when Y is O-(O)C or (R)N-(O)C is 6-22, especially 14-20, but no more than one R1 or YR1, sum being 12 and then the other R1 or YR1, sum is /- 16 (sic); R1 = 5-21C branched alkyl or unsaturated alkyl (both optionally substituted) and the ratio of branched alkyl to unsaturated alkyl is 5:95-95:5, especially 50:50-30:70; the Iodine Value (IV) of the parent fatty acid of the unsaturated alkyl group is 20-140, especially 70-115; X- = softener compatible anion, especially chloride. In the mono long chain softener, YR1 = OH, N(R)H or COOH. Also claimed are: (1) a fabric softener composition comprising: (A) 2-80 (preferably 13-75, especially 15-70) wt.% (X); (B) optionally 40 wt.% principal solvent having ClogP of 0.15-0.64; (C) optionally, in an amount to improve clarity, of low molecular wt. water soluble solvents selected from ethanol, isopropanol, propylene glycol, 1,3-propanediol and/or propylene carbonate, used in an amount which will not form clear compositions by themselves; (D) optionally, in an amount to improve clarity, of water soluble calcium and/or magnesium salt and (E) balance water; (2) fabric softener composition in the form of a stable aqueous dispersion comprising 4-50 (preferably 10-40, especially 15-30)% (X); (3) premix composition comprising (X) and a perfume; (4) premix composition comprising components (A), (B) and (C) in (1); (5) solid fabric softener composition comprising (X); (6) clear aqueous fabric softener composition comprising (X) and (7) a process for making the fabric softener composition which comprises adding the premix composition to water, adjusting pH to 1.5-5 and adding water soluble magnesium and calcium salts to improve viscosity and/or clarity of the composition. |
