The automatic voltage regulator (5) has a generator voltage proportional input and a current related input. The latter is transmitted through an air gap, transformer (2). The secondary winding (2b) of this transformer is connected to an adjustable phase shifting network (3, 4) before being added to the regulator input. The use of an air gap transformer gives a practically linear relationship between primary and secondary current. The phase shift network, typically a capacitor (4) and a variable resistor (3) permits alteration of the generator voltage to current relationship of the regulator input, thereby allowing optimum adjustment for the effects of power factor variation on generator terminal voltage.
