The resins are made by polymerising a mixt. comprising (A) 20-70 mole% of >=1 monomer, contg. no carboxyl gps. (B) 15-60 mole % of >=1 carboxyl gp. contg. monomer, (C) 3-20 mole % hydroxy cpds. comprising a mixt of alcohols with a b.pt >175 degrees C, and consisting of 10-90 wt.% of >=1 water insoluble alcohol; and (D) 0.1-1.0 mole % of a free radical polymerisation initiator. The alcohol contg. resin has an average mol. wt. of 600-4000 and an acid value of 60-250. The prods. are hard glassy solids which can be powdered and dissolved in an aq. base to form a homogeneous, clear, colourless soln. esp. useful as clear, non-yellowing floor polishes. In an example, a hard glassy prod. was made by polymerising a mixt. contg. 7.89 mole.% decyl alcohol, 8.55 mole % 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol, 33.3 mole % methacrylic acid, 16.6 mole % methylmethacrylate, 33.3 mole % styrene and 0.33 mole % benzoyl peroxide. The powdered prod. was dissolved in aq. ammonia soln. to give a clear soln. |
