1497965 Joining rattan poles WONG KAM WAH and TING YUET KAM 20 Sept 1976 [2 March 1976] 8275/76 Heading F2H A method of joining a rattan pole 9 to a member 15, Fig. 3, comprises forming a first hole 13 in the member 15 and locating a screwthreaded shank 21 therein so that a portion 22 of the shank projects therefrom, forming a second hole 8, open at both ends; through the rattan pole 9, inserting a headed and internally threaded sleeve 1 into the second hole 8, and bringing the projecting portion 22 into threaded engagement with the sleeve 1, the portion 22 being introduced into the end 4 of the sleeve remote from the head 5. The member 15 or 23 may be another rattan pole. In Fig. 3, the hole 13 is a blind bore in which is secured an internally threaded socket 16 into which the shank 21 is screwed. In Fig. 7, the shank is a headed bolt 25 which extends with clearance through a hole 24 through the member 23 to engage the sleeve 1 in pole 9. The sleeve is made longer than the diameter of the pole 9 so that it projects into the hole 24 to stiffen the the joint. In another joint, (Fig. 6, not shown), a sleeve 1 is inserted into a through bore in each rattan pole 9, 23 and a headless shank 21 screws into both sleeves. Preferably the sleeves 1 and socket 16 are of nylon, and have longitudinal external ribs 6, Fig. 1, or 20, Fig. 4. The sleeves and the socket may be glued in their respective holes, or may be secured by transverse pins 17, Fig. 3. Instead of external ribs, the sleeve and socket may have a polygonal cross-section, to fit into respective holes of matching cross-section. The through holes may be counterbored to receive the sleeve or bolt heads within the envelopes defined by respective poles. |
