The rapid change tool retention system is for setting up tools, esp. for turning tools found on universal turning machines. It consists of a main retainer and several changeable retainers having positioning and clamping screws. At least one of the changeable retainers has a dove tail cross-section and is firmly clamped in a dove tail shaped recess in the main retainer. The main retainer recess may have a vertical mounting surface with another mounting surface arranged at an acute angle to it. Also at an acute angle to the vertical mounting surface a pivoted clamping shoe can be installed including a boss and a clamping screw.
