PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect defects and the like of a fin by detecting the distance to each fin across the entire surface thereof with a variety of detecting means and judging whether the outer shape of each fin is good or bad based on the detected wave shape thereof. SOLUTION: Changes in distance of a line flow fan 1 to, i.e., position of, a fin 1b are detected optically across the entire surface of the fin 1b by a plurality of detecting means 6 comprising a laser displacement meter disposed corresponding to each run on the outside periphery of each line flow fan 1. The wave shape from the shape of each fin 1b is calculated based on the thus detected wave shape. Then, the calculated wave shape from the shape of the fin is compared to the wave shape from the shape of a non-defective product set beforehand. When there is no deviation at the highest point of the wave shape from the shape of the fin, the investigated line flow fan 1 is judged to be non-defective. When there is deviation at the highest point of the wave shape from the shape of the fin, the investigated line flow fan 1 is judged to be defective because a defect results from a large drop during change over of the fin 1b.
