PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure the reliability on the free stop and to perform the opening and closing operation of a free stop hinge smoothly with a small force capable of opening/closing a flat display or the like and stopping at an arbitrary open angle. SOLUTION: The free stop state can be ensured by the close contact of a taper shaft part 11b of a fixed rotary shaft 1 of a flat display or the like with a taper hole 10c of a fixed shaft 10 mounted a display body or the like by the elastic force of an elastic member 12. When the rotary shaft 11 is opened and closed, the balls 13 mounted on a plurality of recessed parts 11e of a point face part 11d are rotated and displaced running on a cone-shaped taper receiving surface 11f for balls and projected from the recessed parts 11e. The taper shaft part 11b is separated from the taper hole 10c against the elastic force of the elastic member 12 by this projection, whereby the opening and closing motion of the rotary shaft 11 can be smoothly performed with the slight resistance.
