<p>A method of depositing or disposing of waste liqs. contg. radioactive material consists of mixing the liq. waste with a liq. contg. a binder which, when mixed with a hardener, will solidify the waste liq. The mixt. is placed in a tank, then a suitable proportion of the hardener is introduced to produce a free-standing hardened material, is initially stirred in and then left for the hardening to take place. The tank and solidified mixt. is then buried. Pref. the binder is a material which can absorb water as it solidifies and the ratio of binder to hardener is such as to produce a desired degree of hardness in the mixt. The binder is esp. a suspension of partially polymerised particles, pref. urea-formalhedyde, in water. Method is used, in partic. for the disposal of reactor evaporator bottom sediments, of ion exchange resins from nuclear reactor plants, specifically dehydrated radioactive ion exchange resins.</p> |
