1497582 Adjustable steering columns INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO 13 Nov 1975 [21 March 1975] 46876/75 Heading B7H An adjustable steering column comprises a telescopically splined shaft and tube 12, 18 whose relative positions are locked by a wedge member 46 and collar 60, and a washer 42 which allows movement of an upper unsplined shaft portion but prevents passage of a lower splined portion. The wedge member may be in the form of an axially split ring or a number of wedge pieces and may be of metal or plastics. A seating surface 62 on the collar abuts the wedge member so that on screwing down the collar the member traps the shaft. The tube 18 is connected by a pin 28 to a steering gear shaft 30, the latter bearing a resilient cap 82 to prevent shock transfer to the shaft 12 when the column is fully contracted. Shaft 12 is prevented from being pulled out of the tube 18 by the washer 42 engaging the ends of the splines. |
