The process is intended for internally covering a metal tube (3) with a thin layer (1) of one or more other metals. The coating is helically wrapped as a strip with overlapping windings on to a cylindrical core (2), and the core thus wrapped inserted in the tube (3), after which the wound strip is joined to the tube by welding or soldering and the core then removed. Joining may be by explosion-welding, soldering, or thermal or diffusion-welding. Two or more coatings in different metals may be so applied. The coating may be a metal or alloy from the group comprising tantalum, niobium, zirconiu, titanium, molybdenum, platinum, gold, silver or another metal in the platinum group.
