The ignition coil primary (2) supply circuit has a voltage source (3), a first switch (7) in series with the primary winding, and a primary winding current regulator. The current regulator has a second switch (6) between the voltage source and the winding and a freewheel diode which puts the primary winding in freewheel mode when its current lies between upper and lower threshold values.
