<p>Strip material hardenable by water comprises a flexible woven sheet or matte coated with a mixt. of a water-sol., powdered polycarboxylic acid or its percursor (I), an inorg. ion-donating powder (II), water-sol. chelate-forming agent (III), binding agent (IV) and fillers or other water-insol. polymer powders. Pref. (I) is a polymer of acrylic acid/anhydride opt. with acrylamide/acrylonitrile, of mol. wt. 104-105. (II) is oxide/weak acid salt of polyvalent metal or (fluor) aluminosilicate glass with particles is not >0.1 mm. (III) is e.g. tartaric acid. (IV) is PVA or (partially hydrolysed) PVAc. Used principally for splint-making in orthopaedic surgery; also for repairing split trees in forestry work and as model-making material. Compared with traditional Plaster of Paris, it is simple to handle, hardens at room temp. without local heating, has high green strength, sets rapidly, has low wt./high strength, is non-toxic, resistant to water and transparent to X-rays.</p> |
