A machine for generating a surface on a workpiece comprising a spindle support unit, a tool-supporting unit for supporting a tool in cooperation with the face of the workpiece. One of the members swings about a pivot located along the spindle axis to make the tool member swing across the face of the workpiece to generate the desired surface. The support carries floating means for movement relative to the pivot so that the member carried thereby is advanced or retracted relative to the pivot; yieldable biassing means acting on the floating means to cause the member carried thereby to movably advance relative to the pivot into contact with the other member, and a cam arrangement for controlling the floating movement in cooperation with the biasing means. The cam arrangement includes a cam member and a cam follower supported in normally fixed position relative to the floating means and the other being carried by the floating means. The normally-fixed member adjustable relative to the pivot axis in a direction longitudinally relative to the spindle axis.
