The mechanical or electro-mechanical counter has light absorbing and light reflecting fields. Each counter roller (10) has pyramidal shapes contained in it, with reflection surfaces (11) arranged symmetrically around the roller body axis (12) and the spindle (13) so that incident light (14) radial to the common axis is reflected out in a parallel direction (15). The front surface of the roller is covered by a sector disc (16) with ten sectors coding the numerals 0, 1, 2...9 by means of groups of three oblong slots (17) which permit the light to emerge in predetermined directions. After leaving the front face, light rays are received on a conductor plate (18) which retains photo-electric element (19).
