A shaft furnace for the heat treatment of granular material, such as a kiln for calcining lime, includes three zones for preheating, calcining and cooling. As the free shaft cross-section changes from the calcining to the cooling zone, it is subdivided into several openings of the same size which extend into a number of separate subshafts. The smaller subshafts facilitate the maintenance of a narrowly restricted calcining temp. over the whole kiln charge, because separate fuel supplies can now be provided at the openings at the boundary of the calcining zone. The shaft kiln also has a high specific throughput rate.
|
