In order to improve the aerodynamic conditions when printing with ink jet printers, protective droplets are inserted, according to a predetermined pattern, into the sequences of droplets intended for printing. In this process, the number of protective droplets to be inserted between every two printing droplets is dependent on the position of the droplets in the sequence. The ink jet printer has control circuits which comprise a shift register (83) whose memory locations contain in each case the character information assigned to the droplet positions of a coordinate of the character matrix, and circuits (100, 101, 106) for controlling the sequences of droplets for the white and black segments of the characters. The output of one of the control circuits (101) is connected to the shift input of the shift register (83) in order to interrupt the continuation of the same during the production of the protective droplets. <IMAGE> |
