<p>Ignition appts. for the throat gas of shaft furnaces, esp. blast furnaces, uses a magazine rotated in steps by a ratchet mechanism. The magazine is loaded with a circular row of ignition cartridges which are fed stepwise and successively down a chimney in the blast furnace throat. The magazine pref. has a gas-tight lid, and a bottom outlet pipe closed by a shutter and leading to the chimney. The chimney is pref. fitted with a second pipe, also contg. a shutter, and located below a flame monitor used together with a timer for the successive feeding of cartridges down the chimney and into the blast furnace. When a blast furnace is stopped for inspection or repairs, the appts. is used to ignite the throat gas to prevent an explosion when air reaches the gas. The appts. is unaffected by the severe operating conditions and requires only a min. amt. of maintenance.</p> |
