Extensive pressurised sewerage systems - use air compressors for sewage aeration and air scouring of sewers

A press. sewerage system for collection of domestic sewage over a large region employs continuous aeration of the sewage and air scouring of the sewers by the use of air compressors. Turbo- or piston compressors can be used. The aeration and the scouring compressors are pref. housed in the same building, operating in conjunction with air storage vessels which resuce compressor operation time. Air scour valves are automatically, remotely or hand operated. The amt. of air used is varied with sewage flows. The high press. air is injected through dosing valves. Compared with air-lift pumps (e.g.) installed near houses, health dangers from germ-laden air and formation of noxious odours, are avoided. Disinfection is unnecessary and water is not needed for scouring. Gravity-flow sewers can be used to transport the bulked sewage to the treatment plant. and the overall cost of the system is lower.
