PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling automatic switching of a TV/external device are provided to that the TV is easily automatically switched to a corresponding external input mode using a predetermined communication line and information of the external device is easily detected. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for controlling automatic switching of a TV/external device includes a data communication part, and a TV microcomputer(101). The data communication part is used for bidirectional data communication between the external device and the first to third external input modes of the TV. The TV microcomputer switches the TV into a corresponding external input mode when the TV has not been set to the external input mode, and controls information of the external input mode to be output in OSD form.
