1496548 Adding water to diesel engine charge air DAVID BROWN TRACTORS Ltd 18 May 1976 [22 May 1975] 22216/75 Heading F1B Water is introduced into compressed charge air in a diesel engine intake pipe 13 at a position between a turbine-driven compressor 10 and the engine 12, to be evaporated by and thus cool the charge air. A sealed tank 14 may be mounted above the pipe 13 and the water is introduced via duct 16 under control of a spring-biased solenoid valve 17 actuated in dependence of charge air temperature sensed at 18. In alternative constructions Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) the water tank is located below the intake pipe and water is fed by a wick (26) attached to a porous sleeve (27) in the intake pipe, or sucked into a Venturi constriction (38). |
