A pneumatically actuated ram 8 displaces the ring or plurality of rings into the receiving member 7 and which are held in a clamped position against an abutment 10 thereon which may be resilient. A cutter head 21 is introduced into the receiving member and rotary cutters 22 are fed radially to machine a groove or grooves in the rings by rotation of the cutter head, the feed of the cutters being effected by cam 25 and oblique slot 27 and co-operating slide in the cutter head. The machined piston rings are ejected by ejector pins 12 and the ejected rings are blown on to a collecting device 19 by compressed air. Cuttings are similarly removed by a passage 28 in the ram.
