The slide gate (1) is capable of moving sideways so that an aperture lines up with the bore of the pipe (2). The housing (3) has two grooves (4, 5) which are lined with flexible material so that the inner faces of the flexible material are in contact with the plate (1). Fluid pressure is supplied to the space in the groove through the supply pipe (6). If the plate (1) has to be moved, the pressure supplied through the pipe (6) is released so that the pads do not grip the plate.
