The coupling for use in a tape recorder has two annular friction plates, these being engaged by a single coupling spring. A rigid annular element is mounted between the spring and a first friction element. The driven element is constituted by a wheel with the diametral section of a double T, the two stems of the T's forming the cheek of the wheel whose laterial forces forming opposed support surfaces for the friction elements. The cross bar of the T-s forms the wheel rim, the friction elements having an outer dia. slightly less than the inner dia. of the rim. The rigid element has an annular support surface with a conical inner portion terminating at an aperture with a dia. equal to that of the wheel hub aperture.
