Diesel engine incorporating petrol engine parts - uses distance piece between cylinder block and head to accommodate flanged liners

A diesel engine can be built more economically by utilising the components of mass produced petrol engines. The cylinder block (1) of an existing petrole engine is provided with special liners (2) having a flange (13) which abuts against a recess in the water jacket. A distance piece (3) is mounted on the cylinder block (1) and provided with a recess for a seal (16) which is pressed against the end face (14) of the liner (2). The gasket (4) and cylinder head (5) are then secured by the bolts (6). The combustion chamber (7) is formed within the cylinder head (5) and is provided with a pre-heat plug (8). With this design the sealing ring (16) is shielded by the piston at the instant of maximum pressure.
