In mfg. a woven or knitted fabric with a complex pattern, a monitor registers and reads colour data from a pattern paper. The pattern paper contains at least two separate colours which are optically different from each other. The reader discriminates between the colours, and delivers an energy stream when a colour is registered. The energy representing a detected colour is passed through a number of filters, each with an individual mean frequency, so that the energy for the colour passes through at least two filters. The energy passing through a filter is converted into a special signal which is compared with preset tolerance bands. If the signal falls within the tolerance band this is signalled as data for reading by the machine working the fabric. The system allows discrimination of a wide range of colours and tones, so that delicate shades can be worked accurately into the fabric, partic. with Jacquards.
