Methyl-dichloro-phosphane prodn. - from methane and phosphorus trichloride using carbon tetrachloride as starter

Prodn. of methyldichlorophosphane (I) involves the reaction of methane (II) and PCl3 (III) in presence of 3-20 mole% CCl4 (IV) w.r.t. (III), at temps. >500 degrees C. The novelty is that 2-7 mole% (IV), w.r.t. (III), is added as starter and (IV) is 50-80% reacted by varying the reaction temp. between 550 and 650 degrees C at constant dwell times of 0.1-0.9 s. (I) is used as starting material for flameproof finishes for fibres and plastics. (I) can be obtd. in very good yields (92-99%) and economically acceptable conversions (15-32%) under technically feasible conditions.
