Fire igniter, e.g. for chimney, consists of a metallic sponge (Zr, Ti or Hf) combined by impregnation or coating, with a substance promoting flame propagation, which may also act as a binder (pref. wax or a resin, the igniter can be wrapped in a waxed paper), a detonator is included. This device is esp. useful for igniting fuels which are difficult to ignite, such as moist wood, charcoal etc. The metallic sponge consisting of Zr, Ti or Hf has a rather high ignition temp. so that there is no danger of a spontaneous ignition (the ignition temp. of the sponge + binder is between 149 degrees and 454 degrees C), On the other hand a burning metal sponge creates a high temp. (538-927 degrees C), and burns for a long time (20-150 min) for most of this time, a high temp. is maintained (about 816 degrees C).
|
