Atomisation of liquids using gas - or dispersal of gas as small bubbles in liq.

In a process for atomising liqs. using gases or vapour, or for dispersing a gas as small bubbles using a liq., whereby the two phases are mixed, the velocity of the two phase mixt. at the outlet form the mixing chamber is arranged to be equal to the characteristic sonic velocity for the mixt. This is achieved by appropriate selection of the approach velocities of the separate phases w.r.t. the relevant values of their properties (e.g. temp., press.) and to the cross-sectional area of the mixing chamber. The mixt. experiences a sudden fall in press. on leaving the mixing chamber. Used in e.g. drying, combustion and incineration processes, etc. Atomisation processes relying on shearing of the liq. by a gas require upto 1000 litres of gas per kg of liq. The present process can require as little as 10 litres per kg.
