Supply air is fed, via an inlet line (3), to a housing (1) for the material to be dried. The moist discharge air is led away via an outlet line (4). The condenser (6) is connected in the inlet line and the evaporator (10) of a heat pump (7) is connected in the outlet line. By transmitting the heat of the discharge air to the supply air by means of the heat pump, the heating cost and the damage to the environment by waste steam are reduced. The apparatus is particularly suitable for the dryer parts of a paper machine. <IMAGE>
