The gas blast switch has its gas blast piston (28) linked to the moving contacts drive rod (16) by a special linkage (30). This linkage determines the pistons motion relative to the drive rod during the switch's break action such that the piston moves initially in the opposite direction and then in the same direction as the drive rod. The linkage is located in the space enclosed by the piston's housing (22). The compact linkage may consist of rods or of a rack and pinion arrangement.
