Aligning and locking unit is designed for a printing head on a carriage (87) movable along in front of a platen (81). The head (91) is mounted on a support shaft (93) with a gear wheel (95) constantly engaged with a planetary wheel (97) which is rotatably arranged on a crosspiece swivably mounted about the support shaft. The planetary wheel is constantly engaged with an externally toothed gear segment (101) of a driven element (103) of a differential lever system. In order to switch the head to another sector the crosspiece is connected by a coupling (125) to a control unit.
