1495771 Tampons MO OCH DOMSJO AB 14 May 1975 [15 May 1974] 20465/75 Heading A5R An intravaginal tampon 1 comprises an absorbent, resilient body 2 which is of substantially ellipsoidal or spherical configuration, an elongate core (7) Fig. 3, (not shown), of rigid material positioned centrally in the body 2, and a withdrawal cord 3 firmly attached to the core, said absorbent body comprising fibres 4 which are bonded together to form a reticulated structure 6. The ratio of the length of the minor axis to the length of the major axis of the absorbent body lies within the range of 1.0 to 0.4, the density of said body being 0.05 to 0.15 g/cm<SP>3</SP>. The fibres may comprise thermoplastic fibres, non- thermoplastic fibres or a mixture thereof. The thermoplastic fibres may comprise polyethylene, polypropylene, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinylchloride, polyamide or polyester fibres, the non-thermoplastic fibres comprising cotton or viscose rayon. The fibres are bonded together by heat treatment. A liquid-permeable sheath may surround the absorbent body. The core may comprise polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyamide, cardboard, or thermoplastic fibres and has longitudinally extending ribs (8) Fig. 2, (not shown), and/or recesses.
