The closing machine fits a covering sheet onto a container placed in an opening in its baseplate. It has an upper plate moving in relation to the baseplate to seal the edges of the container. The upper plate (9) also has an extra spring-mounted weight (19) with an inertia effect and coupled to striker pins (24). These lock the covering sheet in position in relation to the container. The upper plate can be arranged to hinge on the baseplate, the weight being a closing plate supported on springs, so that it continues to move after the closing movement of the upper plate has been completed. The pins can work in guides in the upper plate, being situated in line with recesses in the baseplate.
