Prepn. of dibenzo-oxazepine - by iron reduction of (2)-O-nitro phenoxy benzaldehyde

Prepn. of dibenzo b,f oxazepine-1,4 of formula (I) comprises reducing 2-(2'-nitrophenoxy)-benzaldehyde with Fe powder in the presence of sulphuric acid in a reaction medium comprising a mixt. of a 1-6C alkanol and water, followed by isolation of the prod. The process gives the prod. of satisfactory quality in good yield (=80%) which comprises favourably with the known process by cyclisation of o-formylamino-diphenylether which is laborious, and gives low and variable yields.
